Le nom est porté dans la Moselle (variante : Mélard, également présente dans le Nord-Pas-de-Calais, où on trouve aussi la forme Mélart). C'est un nom de personne d'origine germanique, dans lequel on trouve la finale "-hard" (= dur), mais dont le premier élément est plus incertain (peut-être "amal" = laborieux, zélé).
